Isn't it interesting how the Indians of the southwest use log ladders on their roofs? They add so much to the famous Indian home groupings made with adobe brick.

The intriguing shape has become an icon in design for southwest decorating and style. A lot of popular homes in Arizona and New Mexico, are based on the styles of the historic Pueblos with ladders.

The kiva ladder has long been an important part of that style. We find Indian pueblos images on rugs, dolls, pottery, paintings, art, and rustic furniture.

Anyplace where people like primitive and country style, rustic wooden ladders have become popular. Try decorating with kiva ladders in your home.

1) Kiva ladders or Indian log ladders as they are also known are a most interesting element in southwest decorating. While traveling or vacationing in the southwestern United States you will see that wooden log ladders are a universal symbol used in southwest design and art.

2) Kiva ladders are decorative pueblo ladders usually made of pine poles that have been hand scraped. The steps of the ladder are notched to fit into notches on the upright poles and lacing of rawhide is used to lash each rung together in a "x" pattern. The ladder is tapered so that the top of the ladder is not as wide as the base giving an optical affect of added height.

3) One excellent way to add pueblo style to your space without actually having pueblo designs is by use of the same pueblo log ladder or kiva ladder. The wooden ladders give a definite Pueblo flair to the plan.

4) Southwest kiva ladders also create a wonderful way to showcase a couple of your favorite southwest rugs or saddle blankets. Some of the other things that go well with wooden ladders are Native blankets, Indian pottery and pow wow drums, carved wooden bowls and rustic table lamps with rawhide lamp shades.

5) Ladders can also be used to highlight special pattern you may like such as kokopelli or other village designs. The use of the kiva ladder as a display rack will further enhance the southwest theme in your room, add some additional color and give the ladder a greater sense of purpose and function.

6) One popular and unique element in southwest pueblo decor is the use of rustic ladders like an A-frame with boards for shelves.

It's very likely that you even have some rugs or other southwest themed things that you can display. Just add a small table beside it or an Indian drum and you will have created a unique and eye catching design.

7) A lot of people also like to use kiva ladders to keep southwest throw blankets for cool evenings. You might use your kiva ladders as a rack for storing and displaying bedspreads or comforters in your bedroom when not in use as well.

You can easily place kiva ladders in every room without any problem by using them in different ways. Use your imagination. The possibilities of how you can use rustic log ladders are limitless. So, if you are interested in an outstanding southwestern design element use rustic pueblo kiva ladders.
