Color is an important part of the different Native American tribes and in fact, as you look at the different items they create, such as blankets, pottery, dolls, and artwork, you would quickly realize that they each use something different. For Southwest decor, even having numerous options regarding patterns and shapes makes the process exciting. For the perfect western style, it always starts with color and from there, you can incorporate other items into the space to complete the look.
1. Red - This color is one of power. An advantage of using red for western style is that it is workable for large areas or as an accent color. In a home with Southwest decor, red is an excellent choice for wall color being accented by borders, pillows and area rugs.
2. Yellow - Another great color often used as accent for the Native American style. Usually, yellow used for a Southwest decor has a deeper hue and while it could be spread over a larger area, it is typically used sparingly, kind of a soft kiss of sunlight.
3. Orange - Burnt orange is a great color for Southwest decor, which is representative of an autumn sunset. Arizona is known for having some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the country, many with splashes of orange color, which is why incorporating it into the design is so important.
4. Green - Another ideal color is green, the shade you would see in cacti. The color green is also earthy and warm, giving the room a natural look and feel.
5. Turquoise - While turquoise is a beautiful stone found in southwest states and commonly used in the design of gorgeous Indian jewelry, it is the least common color for Southwest decor. For a perfect hint of Native American heritage, a small turquoise-colored rug would add a great accent.
6. Black - To bring a hint of mystic design in your Southwest decor, you will often find black intertwined with reds, oranges and yellows.
7. Brown - Obviously, brown is the color of earth so seeing it incorporated in a Southwest decor is common. Using two or three different hues of brown, one that will blend, will create a natural look.
8. Cream - When used in connection with black or bold colors, cream helps to soften a room. In the Southwest, beautiful throw pillows and blankets with stripes or diamond shapes are highlighted with small areas of natural coloring.
